TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Alexander Bublik in the First Round on Monday May 31st, 2021.
An exciting match is expected here in the First Round of the 2021 French Open, as second seeded Daniil Medvedev faces Alexander Bublik. These are two of the most enigmatic players on the ATP Tour, and this match is sure to be full of drama here at Roland Garros 2021. Both men have been in good form so far this year, but they similarly do not count clay as their favorite surface. Will world number two Medvedev finally be able to claim his first win at the French Open? Or will Alexander Bublik cause the upset and advance here in Paris?
Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings, and is the second seed here at the 2021 French Open. The tall Russian has had a solid season so far this year, but as always has struggled on the clay. He has never hidden his dislike for the surface, and has openly stated that his goal here is to simply win a match. While the Russian superstar is seeded second here at Roland Garros, it is very unlikely that he will mount any sort of challenge for the title, and he may not even get out of the First Round as he has been handed a very difficult draw in the form of Alexander Bublik. Despite the difference in rankings it is very difficult to call Medvedev the favorite here due to his struggles on the surface and he should probably be considered the underdog here.
Alexander Bublik is currently ranked a career-high #37 in the ATP world rankings, and is unseeded here at the 2021 French Open. The Kazakhstan native has played some great tennis so far this year, and is widely recognized as one of the most talented players on tour. Long plagued with disciplinary and mental issues, he has seemingly gotten it all together this year and has matured greatly as a player. His big serve and aggressive all-around game allow him to compete with just about anyone, and he will be a serious threat to cause the upset here in the First Round at Roland Garros 2021. While he will have been disappointed to have drawn such a difficult opponent in Round 1, he knows that Daniil Medvedev hates this surface and will be very confident of victory here.
Somewhat surprisingly, this will only be the second meeting between the two players, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head series 1-0. They have not played since 2016 in St. Petersburg, where the Russian claimed a straight-sets victory. This is an extremely hard First Round match to call here at the 2021 French Open, and it really is anyone’s guess who will win here. If this was on a hard court I would predict the Russian to win an entertaining match, but it is very difficult to favor him against a good opponent in Alexander Bublik on clay. Despite his struggles, I am going with Daniil Medvedev to get the hard-fought win here at Roland Garros. He will likely be more motivated to do well at a Grand Slam and I think that he will be very focused despite his hatred for the surface. Bublik is certainly capable of the upset and I would probably avoid this match for betting purposes altogether, but I am going with the Russian to get his first win at Roland Garros, advancing to the Second Round here in Paris.
