TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Pablo Andujar meets Dominic Stricker (WC) in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, May 20th, 2021.
Will Dominic Stricker continue to impress everyone as he looks to make it 3 upsets in a row here in Geneva? Will Pablo Andujar back up that huge win over the returning Roger Federer in the Round of 16? Both players have played amazing tennis all week here at the 2021 Geneva Open, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
Dominic Stricker has been playing great here in Geneva, beating Marin Cilic in his first match, and now beating Marton Fucsovics in his second match. Dominic Stricker is yet to lose a set, beating Cilic 7-6/6-1 and Fucsovics 7-5/6-4. Dominic is the local wildcard and I am sure the crowd are happy to see at least 1 Swiss player putting on some solid performances. However, Dominic Stricker is still very inexperienced, and he now meets a clay court expert in Pablo Andujar and he will have to raise his level even more if he wants to make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open, his home tournament.
Pablo Andujar shocked everyone in the Round of 16, beating the local favourite and hero Roger Federer in 3 tight sets 6-4/4-6/6-4. Pablo Andujar was able to maintain his composure during the match, expecially when he was down 4-2 in the final set where everyone expected Roger to win. Pablo Andujar raised his level in the crucial moments, and within 10 minutes, he had won the match in incredible fashion. Pablo is still nowhere near the level he could play at, and he did not face a great Federer, but this win will have given him a lot of confidence in his abilities. I am sure the Spaniard will make use of this confidence against the young wildcard Dominic Stricker.
Pablo Andujar and Dominic Stricker have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Striker has played great all week here at the 2021 Geneva Open, I see his run of form ending here. Pablo Andujar is a clay court lover, and in these smaller ATP 250 tournaments he can still somewhat compete. After beating Federer, Andujar’s confidence will be sky-high, and he will have enough momentum behind him to teach the young gun a lesson.
