TennisSection previews the 2021 Serbia Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Soon-Woo Kwon in the Second Round on Wednesday, April 21st 2021.
The Serbia Open makes its return to the ATP Calendar for the first time since 2021, when Andreas Seppi claimed the title. Top seeded Novak Djokovic of the host nation will begin his quest to claim a third title here at home against Korean Soon-Woo Kwon. Can Kwon cause the massive upset? Or will local hero Djokovic cruise to victory as expected and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Serbia Open?
Novak Djokovic is the current world #1 in the ATP rankings and is considered one of the greatest players in tennis history. After a strong start to the year where he claimed his #18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, he sat out for a few months due to an abdominal injury that he sustained in Melbourne. He was then shockingly upset in the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters by Dan Evans, one of the most surprising results of recent memory. Some rust was expected in his return to the game but after a straight sets win over young star Jannik Sinner in the Second Round, no one could have predicted that he would lose to the Brit. He will be extremely hungry to go all the way here at the 2021 Serbia Open and that spells bad news for his opponent Soon-Woo Kwon.
Soon-Woo Kwon is currently ranked #85 in the ATP world rankings, and is known as a very talented up and coming player on the tennis tour. The young Korean has been in good form of late, impressively reaching the Quarter-Finals at the Andalucia Open a few weeks ago. Kwon was outstanding in his First Round win here over Roberto Carballes Baena, dominating the Spaniard from the baseline and forcing his usually consistent opponent into numerous errors. While Kwon is in good form, Novak Djokovic is a much tougher opponent than he is used to, and he enters this match as the massive underdog. He will have been pleased with his recent results, but unless something shocking happens, this is the end of the line for Kwon here at the 2021 Serbia Open.
This is the first time that Soon-Woo Kwon and Novak Djokovic will face each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. Local tennis fans will be delighted to have their hero playing at home again at the 2021 Serbia Open, and Djokovic will have lots of support. The world number one is the huge favorite for the title here in Belgrade, and he will start his campaign with a dominant win over the young Korean. Kwon is a solid player, but he simply is no match for the tennis legend and will fall in two straight sets here. The Serbian will feel like he has a point to prove and has a massive chip on his shoulder after his early exit in Monte-Carlo. Expect Novak Djokovic to win here without many problems and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Serbia Open.
