TennisSection previews the 2021 Barcelona Open as David Goffin (8) meets Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the Second Round on Tuesday, April 20th 2021.
Will Pierre-Hugues Herbert finally get his first victory over the Belgian, David Goffin, by causing the upset here at the 2021 Barcelona Open? Will David Goffin continue to build on the solid base he showed everyone last week at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters? Both players can definitely win this match if they are at their best, however, only one will. Who will it be?
Pierre-Hugues Herbert cruised through his First Round match here at the 2021 Barcelona Open, beating Sumit Nagal in straight sets 7-5/6-0. The first set was a bit tighter, just as both players were aiming to get their best game and their feet sorted on the clay court. However, after that, Pierre-Hugues Herbert was able to just dominate and serve Nagal a nice bagel. Pierre-Hugues Herbert is aiming to make his 2021 season focus more on his Singles game as he has had a lot of success in the Doubles, but he wants to show everyone that he is also a very solid Singles player. How will the Frenchman fare against an opponent, in David Goffin, who he has always struggled against?
David Goffin had a very solid week last week at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, reaching the Quarter-final, beating the likes of Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev along the way. David Goffin likes to play on clay as he is able to spend more time getting to the ball and planning his way around his opponents game. Goffin is a very experienced player, and he will be very determined to keep improving on his game here as he has gained some momentum, and it will be best to keep this going instead of having to start from scratch. David Goffin will be both confident and wary coming into this Second Round match at the 2021 Barcelona Open as he meets a player who he knows can beat him, even if he has not done so in the past, in Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
David Goffin and Pierre-Hugues Herbert have met 6 times before, with David Goffin having won all 6 of their encounters. Although Goffin has won all of their matches, their last match was played right at the start of the year at the Antalya Open where Pierre-Hugues Herbert was winning 6-4/5-4 with over 5 match points, but was unable to close it out on his serve. Once Goffin broke back, he was able to run away with the match after Herbert was very disappointed with himself. This is definitely going to be a very tight match and one which will be filled with great rallies, but at the end of the day, I expect Goffin to win here due to his mental game and their history on the court.
