TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Jannik Sinner (21) meets Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16 on Tuesday March 30th, 2021.
A fierce battle is expected here at the 2021 Miami Open, as two young stars Jannik Sinner and Emil Ruusuvuori battle in the Round of 16. The young Italian Sinner has been getting all the headlines and deservedly so, but Ruusuvuori has been quietly having a very solid start to the year and has been impressive so far in Miami. Can he upset his higher-ranked opponent? Or will Sinner advance to the Quarter-Finals?
Jannik Sinner is considered one of the top young prospects on the ATP Tour and is already ranked a career-high #28 in the world at the tender age of 19. The holder of two ATP titles, it is only a matter of time before he breaks into the top 10 and contends for all the big tournaments. The young Italian has continued his impressive form this season into the 2021 Miami Open and is my dark-horse pick for the title here. After dismantling Hugo Gaston in the Second Round, he upset fourteenth seed Karen Khachanov in a three set thriller in the Third Round. Displaying maturity well beyond his years, he is a very aggressive baseliner, capable of going toe to toe with the best. He enters this match as the firm favorite to advance here over Emil Ruusuvuori.
Emil Ruusuvuori is currently ranked a career high #83 in the ATP world rankings and is quietly putting together a strong 2021 season. Like his opponent Jannik Sinner, he has been in good form so far here at the 2021 Miami Open. He shocked the tennis world when he upset title contender Alexander Zverev in the Second Round, showing incredible resilience to recover from a set down to get the win. While he enters this match as the underdog, his confidence is surely sky-high after that win and he cannot be discounted here. He does not get therecognition as his opponent, but he is a top prospect on the ATP Tour and certainly capable of advancing to the Quarter-Finals here.
The two young stars have never faced each other on the ATP Tour and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This match truly offers us a glimpse into the future as they will certainly be around the top of the game in years to come. On paper, Jannik Sinner is the clear favorite but the young Finn Emil Ruusuvuori has shown what he is capable of and is in with a chance here. I expect a very tight battle, but the Italian has more big match experience and should come through here. He has a slightly bigger game and has weapons that Ruusuvuori is not yet ready to deal with. This is potentially the pick of the Round of 16 matches, and Jannik Sinner should be backed to advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Miami Open.
