Max Purcell is not really known on the ATP Tour Singles circuit as he mainly focuses on the Doubles. However, he was handed a lucky loser spot in this tournament as someone withdrew late. Max Purcell met James Duckworth in the Round of 32 here at the Viking International, and was able to beat him in 3 tight sets 6-2/3-6/7-6. The match was back and forth from start to finish, but Purcell used his knowledge of doubles to find some angles which made James uncomfortable. Max Purcell will be happy with this performance, but he will now meet a veteran who is so hard to beat when he is in form in Gael Monfils. Can he cause the upset?
Gael Monfils will want to bounce back after his loss last week in Halle in the opening round, losing the Lloyd Harris in straight sets 4-6/4-6. Gael Monfils has not had the season he would have liked, only having won 2 matches and losing 7 along the way. However, I am sure that this bad run of form will not continue much longer. Gael Monfils just needs 2-3 consecutive wins under his belt, and here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open, he has the perfect opportunity to do just that. Gael Monfils loves fast conditions, and grass is so fast. Gael will know he will have a tough opponent in the confident and determined Max Purcell in the Round of 16, but he will put up a fight to get the job done.
Gael Monfils and Max Purcell have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Max Purcell played well in his Round of 32 match and he will come into this match with confidence and belief in himself. However, Gael Monfils will not allow himself to lose his only 2 matches of the grass season before Wimbledon. Gael will know that this win will be very important for him because he will have a tougher time next week if he does not get 1 or 2 wins under his belt here at the Viking International. It will be tight, but experience will prevail and Monfils will gain some confidence again.
