This is shaping up to be a classic battle of “Youth vs Experience” as fifth seeded veteran Grigor Dimitrov faces the young star Lorenzo Musetti in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Acapulco Open. Can the Italian cause yet another upset here in Mexico? Or will former Acapulco Open champion Dimitrov be too much a challenge for him to overcome. This is sure to be a very entertaining match, who will win and advance to their first Semi-Final of the year?
Grigor Dimitrov is currently ranked #17 in the world and is a former top five player. After a disappointing past few years due to lack of form and fitness he has been much improved in 2020-2021. He seems to be playing with a renewed motivation and is steadily improving his ranking. He has been very impressive thus far here at the 2021 Aapulco Open, winning both of his matches in straight sets. He was very impressive in what was a tough Round of 16 win over Miomir Kecmanovic, dominating the Serbian from the baseline and returning serve particularly well. In this form he is very hard to beat, and his vast experience will prove invaluable against the young Italian. He enters this match as the firm favorite, but will be weary of the Lorenzo Musetti’s giant killing exploits.
Lorenzo Musetti has been having a dream run here at the 2021 Acapulco Open. After advancing through the Qualifying Rounds, he stunned Diego Schwartzman in the First Round. The Italian is no stranger to upsets, having upset Stan Warwinka and Kei Nishikori last year. He was equally as impressive in the Round of 16, coming from behind to stun Frances Tiafoe in three sets. Musetti has a big game despite his young age and will be confident here, with a lot of tennis under his belt for the year. He is a very aggressive player, so it remains to be seen if he can be patient here against Grigor Dimitrov, who is likely to vary the pace quite a bit. While he is the huge underdog, he is playing very confidently and has maturity beyond his years. He will definitely be backing himself to cause yet another upset.
Regardless of the outcome, this is certain to be a very entertaining match between two exciting players. Both are very aggressive baseliners, so the match is sure to be filled with lots of winners and flashy shots. This will be the first meeting between the two players, with the head to head series standing at 0-0. I am going with Grigor Dimitrov to get the win here, despite Lorenzo Musetti’s fantastic form. The Bulgarian is very experienced, and the young Italian is not likely to be able to handle his variation and shot selection. I expect a thrilling match, but Grigor Dimitrov will win and advance to the Semi-Finals at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
