TennisSection previews the 2021 Dubai Open as Denis Shapovalov (3) meets Jeremy Chardy in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, March 18th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov continue to cruise through his matches here at the 2021 Dubai Open as he has won 4 consecutive sets in just over 2 hours on court? Will Jeremy Chardy finally have an easy straight forward match on his hands where he can shine and show everyone that he still has a lot of potential? Both players have put in hard work here in Dubai to make their way to this Quarter-final, but who will book themselves a spot in the Semi-finals?
Denis Shapovalov has been absolutely on top of his game this week, finally showing us some consistency from start to finish throughout his matches. Shapovalov has only spent just over 2 hours on court due to his incredible match speed. In the Third Round, Shapovalov beat the in form Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets 6-4/6-3 with ease. Shapovalov just seemed to know exactly what to do at every moment, and he was able to get on top of both sets quite early. Shapovalov should still know that although he played great in his last 2 matches, this can always change. Denis is a great talent, and it will be interesting to see for how long he can keep up this incredibly high risk, high reward playing style. Shapovalov will now face a player who he knows will be a tough one to beat in Jeremy Chardy.
Jeremy Chardy put on yet another very solid comeback performance in his extremely tight encounter against Karen Khachanov, beating the heavy favourite Russian in 3 sets, 6-7/6-4/6-4. Jeremy Chardy pushed Karen Khachanov to his limits, and this is now two matches in a row where Chardy was able to come back from a set down. Chardy will want to get some more easy matches under his belt, because at the moment, his issue it his ability to put his foot down when he is on top of the match. Jeremy Chardy will know this will not happen any time soon here in Dubai as he know meets the No.3 seed Denis Shapovalov in what is going to be an incredibly tight and entertaining encounter. Will the experienced Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy, be able to book a spot in the Semi-finals here in Dubai as he looks to beat Denis Shapovalov?
Denis Shapovalov and Jeremy Chardy have met twice before, with Denis Shapovalov having won both of their prior encounters. Their last meeting was in the second round of the Canada Masters, where Denis Shapovalov absolutely dominated winning in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Shapovalov was in better form at the end of 2019 than he is now, but this does not mean he is not in better form than Jeremy Chardy. Chardy is obviously the more experienced player of the two, but over the last 2 years he has not achieved much compared to Denis. I expect this to be a very tight encounter, with both players being able to book a spot in the Semi-finals of the Dubai Open, however, Denis Shapovalov should come through this one.
