But Popyrin had a fantastic junior career on clay which yielded a French Open junior’s title back in 2017 when he beat Nicola Kuhn to become the first Aussie in 50 years to win the crown. Popyrin though has struggled to have a similar impact on the professional tour on the red dirt. He’ll have his hands full against the toughest qualifier on offer in Aslan Karatsev. The Russian appears to be back to his scintillating best, hitting his forehand with venomous power and accuracy. It’s unfortunate that Popyrin has received such a brutal draw. You always want to get a qualifier in your first round at Major but not in this case.
