Ben Shelton leads Lorenzo Sonego 1-0 in their head-to-head. Shelton took down Sonego 7-5 in the 3rd set in Cincinnati last year and has made some big improvements since then. Sonego likes to attack with his forehand, but I suspect with Shelton’s raw power and aggressive style, Sonego will be on defense more often than not.

Neither Shelton nor Sonego have had particularly impressive clay court seasons so far, with Sonego’s resume being especially disappointing considering his previous results on the clay. The conditions in Paris may really favor Shelton due to his big serving, and he’s already made a great run at the only other slam this year. Sonego on the other hand is more comfortable on the clay but with the results he’s shown, it’s hard to believe he’ll all of a sudden pick up his level. Ben Shelton though is continuing to improve on the clay where he hasn’t played nearly as much as the Italian, so even though he may be the underdog despite being the higher-ranked player, I think he’ll manage to grab his first-ever win at the French Open in a tight contest and move through.
