Taylor Townsend is through to her first singles final at the WTA 125K in Florence, surviving her longest match of the week against Italian veteran Sara Errani. She saved a match point late on in the second set on her own serve and clawed back a double break deficit in the decider before prevailing 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours 43 minutes. Opponent Jasmine Paolini has been the iron woman on home soil. Paolini has clocked the most minutes this week after seeing off Lucia Bronzetti in an all-Italian semifinal lasting two hours and 38 minutes. All four of her matches this week have gone the full distance and she’s also slated to play a semifinal in doubles on Saturday evening. After a subpar year, the wheels are turning in the right direction for Paolini who has seen her stock fall sharply in recent weeks. The same could be said of Townsend who has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes, winning nine of her 11 matches on the European clay. That included a stunning second-round upset of compatriot Jessica Pegula in Rome. A win on Sunday will take Townsend back into the top 100. After a long and arduous week, Paolini could be running out of fumes and while she did not wilt against Bronzetti, Townsend’s craft and fine shotmaking could be enough to keep the Italian out of the reckoning.
