TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open quarterfinal match featuring Jessica Pegula vs. Veronika Kudermetova on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.
Jessica Pegula vs. Veronika Kudermetova Preview
It’s another quarterfinal for Jessica Pegula where she takes on big-serving Russian Veronika Kudermetova. Who will prevail and advance into the Madrid Open semifinals?
Jessica Pegula had a tough time in subduing last year’s Roland Garros semifinalist Martina Trevisan, but she eventually succeeded in completing a three-set win. The American, a beaten finalist last year at the Madrid Open, has now made the last eight or better in six of her last seven WTA 1000 tournaments. Can she go all the way this week?
Veronika Kudermetova will have a lot to say about that. The World No. 13 has been the Iron Woman at the Madrid Open, digging out a trio of three-set wins to reach the quarterfinals. She saw off countrywoman Daria Kasatkina in the round of 16, saving a couple of match points.
Jessica Pegula vs. Veronika Kudermetova Prediction and Pick
Jessica Pegula and Veronika Kudermetova have not played each other on the WTA Tour, with this quarterfinal match being their first meeting. Kudermetova has clocked over eight hours of tennis at this event, more than anybody else this fortnight. That is not ideal coming up against one of the most consistent and physically gifted players in Jessica Pegula. The American has extraordinary rally tolerance, some quick reflexes behind her return and she’ll ask more questions on the Kudermetova serve which has been a bedrock this fortnight. I expect Pegula to come through this one, potentially in two tight sets.
