TennisSection previews the 2023 WTA BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells as Alycia Parks takes on Anna Kalinskaya in the first round on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
Rising American star Alycia Parks faces a tough challenge in her opening match of the 2023 WTA BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Will Parks return to winning ways at the desert when she squares off against Anna Kalinskaya?
Alycia Parks vs. Anna Kalinskaya Match Preview
This will be Alycia Parks’ second main draw appearance at the Indian Wells tournament. Parks needs no reminding of her first outing here, losing to Arantxa Rus 6-0 6-1 in 2021. However, she is a completely different player. Parks has grown in stature and ranking over the past eight months and comes to the BNP Paribas Open this year ranked 55th in the world rankings. She won a WTA title, in Lyon, last month, although her recent form makes her a sizable underdog against Anna Kalinskaya.
Anna Kalinskaya has also been steadily rising the WTA rankings in recent months. The Russian is only 24, two years older than Alycia Parks, and sits nine spots from her career-high #51. Kalinskaya reached her first quarterfinal of the season at the ATX Open in Texas, taking a set from Danielle Collins, but lost in three. Can she find her winning at Indian Wells?
Alycia Parks vs. Anna Kalinskaya Prediction and Pick
Alycia Parks and Anna Kalinskaya have not played each other on the WTA Tour. So this first-round match at Indian Wells will be their first meeting. Since winning her maiden WTA title in Lyon, Parks has been disappointing, winning just once in four matches. Although the conditions favor counterpunches at the desert, Parks can still win here if she overcomes her mental hiccups. She has the bigger serve and if her forehand is consistent enough, she can generate sufficient power to rack up winners.
