Australian Open 2023: Frances Tiafoe vs. Daniel Altmaier Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on Daniel Altmaier in the Round of 128 on Monday, January 16, 2023.

After winning the United Cup just a couple of weeks ago, Frances Tiafoe will start his Australian Open exuding confidence. Will the American sail past Daniel Altmaier routinely as the odds suggest?

Frances Tiafoe had the season of his life in 2022, reaching the semifinals of the US Open against all the odds. It was a terrific year although he did not any titles. Tiafoe will be looking to do just that in 2023 and he has started on a positive note by winning the United Cup team competition. He arrives in Melbourne at a career-high ranking of No. 17 and possibly in the best shape possible. Will he overcome Daniel Altmaier on Monday?

Daniel Altmaier will play at the Australian Open for just the second time. Last year he faced a difficult first round against compatriot Alexander Zverev and lost in straight sets. And he didn’t have any luck of the draw this time, being pitted against World No. 17 Frances Tiafoe in the first round. Will Altmaier shock the American?

Frances Tiafoe and Daniel Altmaier have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match will be their first official meeting. Altmaier has played just once this year, losing a qualifying match in Auckland to Thiago Monteiro. By contrast, Tiafoe has played five times, winning all his singles matches at the United Cup. The American is clearly playing at a higher ceiling than the German and should win this match very comfortably at the Australian Open.
