TennisSection previews the 2023 Adelaide International as Novak Djokovic takes on Quentin Halys in the second round on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
Novak Djokovic’s return to Australia began more positively this time as the Serb won his opening round at the Adelaide International. More of the same will be expected of the top seed when he takes on France’s Quentin Halys. Who will prevail?
Novak Djokovic barely broke sweat as he made light work of Constant Lestienne on his first singles match on Australian soil in almost two years. Having lost his doubles match on Monday, Djokovic was not to be denied as he earned his first win of the season in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Adelaide International. The reaction from the home fans was very positive and engaging and Djokovic was overall pleased with his performance as he completed a 6-3 6-2 win over a tricky opponent. Next up for him is another Frenchman in Quentin Halys, whom he has beaten before on Australian territory.
Quentin Halys, meanwhile, stunned Jordan Thompson to pick up a 6-3 6-4 win in his first match at the Adelaide International. Halys served lights out tennis, hitting 14 aces and not facing a single break point. Thompson was a slight favorite going into that match, having defeated the Frenchman on the lawns of Mallorca last season and also getting a lion’s share of home support. But was outplayed, and on a day when Halys just couldn’t gift his opponent cheap points, Thompson was sent packing. Now the ultimate challenge awaits Halys as he lines up to face top-seeded Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic leads Quentin Halys 1-0 in their head-to-head. Djokovic defeated Halys at the 2016 Australian Open in straight sets and went on to win the title. The Serb is at short odds to win the Adelaide International this week, but will likely face much sterner tests in the semifinal and final if he gets there. We cannot see anything but a comfortable win for the Serbian star.
