Astana Open 2022: Novak Djokovic vs. Daniil Medvedev Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Astana Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals on Saturday, October 8th, 2022.

Will Novak Djokovic get the win? Will Daniil Medvedev pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where two of the very best players in the world, possibly the two best, come to a very exciting clash. Who will triumph and move through to the final at the 2022 Astana Open?

Novak Djokovic is by no means the clear favorite to win the match, but he’s shown a much better run of form lately and has had the better season despite their respective positions on the rankings. If Djokovic wants to win this match, he’s going to have to come to the net, while no one can outplay Novak from the baseline when he’s on, Medvedev looked scary good in his quarterfinal, and Djokovic is gonna have to draw on his weaknesses, as Medvedev is one of the few players who can really counteract Djokovic’s tactics as these two face off in what should be an extraordinary match for a place in the 2022 Astana Open finals.

Daniil Medvedev put on one of his best performances of the season against Roberto Bautista Agut, one of his toughest ever opponents, yet being able to hit a winner from any position on court and finally tuning up his serve to what it was some months ago. As he comes up against Novak Djokovic, he knows he can win, and he’s going to focus on serving well and keeping on pace with Djokovic, and attacking him purely from the baseline. The issue for Medvedev though, is Djokovic’s ability to draw on Medvedev’s far back return position and not allow him to get into any of his return games. Medvedev is going to have to put on an aggressive masterclass if he wants a shot at the final here at the 2022 Astana Open.

Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have met ten times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 6-4. In one of the best current rivalries on the ATP Tour, these two clash in their 11th career meeting, and one which promises to be a battle. With both players looking incredible in their quarterfinals, we can only almost guess the winner, but with the tactics Novak displayed in their last meeting in the finals of the Paris Masters, I expect the Serbian superstar to defend incredibly well and not allow Medvedev to pull him off the court as he looks to book his spot in the final of the 2022 Astana Open.
