Hubert Hurkacz hasn’t been having the best time lately despite keeping his top 10 ranking, failing to do anything at the majors this year, and outside of a title in Halle, not making many waves on the ATP Tour outside of a final run in Montreal. While he’s still the favorite for this match, it could get very dangerous for him quickly as he faces Dominic Thiem. While Thiem certainly isn’t at his best, no one wants to see Thiem in their draw, especially as time goes on and the Austrian improves here at the 2022 Metz Open.

Dominic Thiem took down Richard Gasquet in a pretty solid performance, hitting excellently from the baseline and able to take care of his serve very efficiently. The most dangerous aspect of facing the Pole here is definitely the server. While Thiem in general doesn’t love big servers, Hurkacz in particular has troubled him, especially on a quicker surface like here at the 2022 Metz Open.

Hubert Hurkacz and Dominic Thiem have met twice before, with Hubert Hurkacz leading the head to head 2-0. While the head to head definitely doesn’t look good for Thiem, it’s not the worst thing in the world. For one, his first loss came in Miami in 2019, really before Thiem hit his hard court stride and became arguably the best hard court player in the world for that short span in 2020. Their second meeting was a loss at the ATP Cup in 2020 in 3 sets, however, Thiem was very lackluster that entire week, losing to several players well below his ranking, right before that epic run to the final in Australia. While it may get very tough, Thiem might just be able to pull this one off and show some positive signs that he’s heading back to form as he looks to upset the 2nd seed and make the last eight of the 2022 Metz Open.
