TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 32 on Friday, September 2nd, 2022.
Will Matteo Berrettini get the win? Will Andy Murray pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a mouth watering matchup with the British legend facing one of the best players on tour at the moment. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 US Open?
Matteo Berrettini got a hard fought win after cruising through his first round, and although he didn’t look his best, he’s looking better and better here in New York. He won’t be particularly excited to be facing Andy Murray, but he’ll be ready for the challenge and he has the game to beat him. If he serves well, I don’t see him losing this match, but Murray will try to abuse the backhand wing as much as he can, let’s see what the Italian hammer has to offer in this one at the 2022 US Open.
Andy Murray marched on past Nova as he still looks to be in fine form, but this contest against Matteo Berrettini is going to get very tricky for him. He has his shot to win, but he’ll need to pounce on any 2nd serve he gets, while making sure Berrettini doesn’t run him off the court with his forehand. While he does have the skills to do it, I don’t expect him to come out and be able to aggressively dictate the Italian as his plan will be, so this one will get particularly tricky for Murray as he looks to somehow find a way into the fourth round of the 2022 US Open.
Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray have met three times before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 2-1. Their first meeting was a tight win from Murray in 2 tiebreakers, but Berrettini got the better of him in their next 2 meetings, both on grass. If Berrettini wants to keep up his streak, he’s going to need to end points quick, and I certainly expect him to come prepared with that strategy but it’s still going to be a tight contest as the pair will battle for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2022 US Open.
