TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Pablo Carreno Busta (4) in the Semi-Finals on Friday June 25th, 2021.
Daniil Medvedev and Pablo Carreno Busta have both played fantastic tennis so far this week at the 2021 Mallorca Open, each advancing to the Semi-Finals without dropping a set. While both men have had outstanding careers, neither of them has ever reached this stage in a grass court event, and will be seeking to continue their fine form here into Wimbledon. Who will get the win here and advance to their first ever grass court Final?
Pablo Carreno Busta is ranked #13 in the ATP world rankings and is the fourth seed here at home at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Spaniard has a reputation of being one of the most solid and consistent performers on the ATP Tour, but his grass court performances have been woeful to say the least. In his entire career he has only won two matches on the surface, and is yet to win a match at Wimbledon in five attempts. PCB has been outstanding here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, defeating the dangerous Jiri Vesely in the Round of 16 and then Jordan Thompson in the Quarters to reach this stage. While he is the underdog here, he should never be discounted due to his fighting spirit. Now that he is in form he will be backing himself to cause the upset here over world number two Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 on the ATP Tour, and is the top seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Russian has had a very mixed season so far in 2021, with good results on hard courts and a disappointing clay court season. However, he did find some form at the French Open, very surprisingly reaching the Quarter-Finals there and will be hoping to carry that over to Wimbledon. His grass court preparations hit a snag in Halle, where he was dumped out in the First Round by Jan-Lennard Struff. He has been much improved so far here in Mallorca, producing fine performances to defeat Corentin Moutet and Casper Ruud in straight sets. His movement on the grass has been an issue in the past but he said he is getting more and more comfortable, which is bad news for his opponent here, Pablo Carreno Busta.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head series 2-1. However, they have not played each other since 2018, and both have improved significantly since then. Both men have played outstanding tennis this week at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and will be eager to reach their first grass-court Final in their careers. While neither player is fully comfortable on this surface, thie confidence on it is growing, and they will be hoping to continue this momentum into Wimbledon. All things considered, I am backing Daniil Medvedev here to reach the Final. His serve has been outstanding so far this week, and his flat groundstrokes will cause Pablo Carreno Busta a lot of problems. Expect the Spaniard to put up a tough fight but ultimately the Russian will win in two tight sets, advancing to his first ever grass court Final.
