US Open 2022: Dan Evans vs. Jiri Vesely Tennis Pick and Prediction

Evans is the obvious favorite on paper but Vesely has been known to pull off an upset or two. This will be a fascinating match between two contrasting styles, who will win and move on to the Second Round?

Dan Evans is the second ranked Brit on the ATP Tour and is the 20th seed at the 2022 US Open. The versatile Englishman has been having a very solid year, winning a title in Adelaide and recently reaching the Semi-Finals in Montreal. However, he followed that great run with a First Round loss in Cincinnati, which would have slowed some of the momentum that he generated. Regardless, he is a very good player on this surface and with his all-around game, especially his slice backhand he is a tricky opponent to face. Jiri Vesely is tasked with stopping him and while it will be difficult, the Czech is equipped with a huge serve and will be looking to take advantage.

Jiri Vesely is the 68th ranked player in the world, but enters the 2022 US Open in poor form. After a decent run at Wimbledon where he reached the Third Round he has struggled, even dropping down to the Challenger level to find some form. That backfired spectacularly as he lost to 842nd ranked Aidan Mayo which would have dealt a huge blow to his confidence. Despite everything looking like it is against him, he was once ranked as high as 35 in the world, and is a decent player. He also possesses a massive serve, that is sure to win him a lot of free points if he is locked in. Vesely is the massive underdog here against Dan Evans, and it will likely take a miracle for him to get the win in this sort of form.

This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Jiri Vesely surprisingly leading the head to head 1-0. However, that match was five years ago on clay and holds no bearing on this one. I am expecting a rather easy win for Dan Evans here. He has been in good form lately despite his First Round loss last week, and is one of the more tricky opponents to play against. In my opinion, players need to be in good form to get past Evans, and Jiri Vesely is in anything but. He will likely keep it close due to his serve but he will be no match for the Englishman, who will win here and move on to the Second Round at the 2022 US Open.
