TennisSection previews the 2022 Nordea Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Elias Ymer in the second round on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022.
Will the number three seed Diego Schwartzman get off to a good start at the Nordea Open? Or will Swedish wild card Elias Ymer score a rare top 20 win of the season?
Diego Schwartzman will return to action at the Nordea Open following his subpar grass court season. The Argentine won just once in three tournaments on the lawns, and suffered a shock second-round defeat to British wild card Liam Broady at the Wimbledon Championships. What was even more startling was the manner in which he let the match slip away despite holding a two-sets-to-one lead, eventually going down in five sets. Schwartzman will have the chance to return to winning ways on a surface he has excelled not just this season but throughout his career. Will he avoid the upset when he takes on home favorite Elias Ymer?
Schwartzman will hope lightning does not strike twice following his loss to Broady. He takes on Elias Ymer, a crowd favorite, and a man who will be on a mission to score a second top 20 win of the season. Ymer is a wild card entrant at the Nordea Open for the umpteenth time. But ironically, he has never gone beyond the second round in each of his previous eight main draw appearances since making his debut as a teenager in 2013. The 26-year-old was too strong for Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, winning his opener 6-4 7-6.
Diego Schwartzman leads Elias Ymer 2-0 in their head-to-head. Both meetings took place at Grand Slam level, with Schwartzman winning their 2015 bout at the US Open and the 2021 Australian Open. Ymer is coming off a very solid opening-round win, but I am struggling to pinpoint exactly how he can hurt Schwartzman. The Argentine is one of the best movers on a clay court and naturally holds the greater advantage when it comes to counterpunching abilities. If Schwartzman can get through the opening few games comfortably, he should be able to hold off the home favorite at the Nordea Open.
