Nordea Open 2022: Stan Wawrinka vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Tennis Prediction and Pick

TennisSection previews the 2022 Nordea Open as Stan Wawrinka takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round on Monday, July 11th, 2022.

Will Stan Wawrinka snap his three-match losing streak when he takes on Pablo Carreno Busta? Or will the tenacious Spaniard score his first victory over the three-time Grand Slam winner at the Swedish Open? This is finely poised opener in Nordea and we are in for a treat.

Stan Wawrinka’s grass-court season ended on a whimper as he lost to fast-rising Italian Jannik Sinner in the first round of Wimbledon. The Swiss had not featured in any grass court match prior to last month since the 2019 season, largely due to his career-threatening knee injuries. So, understandably, expectations were extremely low when he made his return to a surface he so often struggles to produce his best tennis. His sole win on the lawns came at Queens when he took out Frances Tiafoe in that dramatic three-setter.

Pablo Carreno Busta, meanwhile, extended his winless patch at Wimbledon after he retired from his match against Dusan Lajovic. Since making his main draw debut at the All England Club in 2014, the Spaniard has lost in the first round in each of his last six trips, and injury in his first round match this year ensured that he has remarkably failed to score a win on the lawns of SW19. As ridiculous as it sounds, Carreno Busta remains a force on other surfaces, and will be looking to add to his six ATP title at this week’s Nordea Open.

Stan Wawrinka leads Pablo Carreno Busta 3-0 in their head-to-head. Two of their meetings were played on clay, with Wawrinka winning each time including an emphatic result on home soil in Geneva. But the last time they played, Wawrinka was ranked inside the world’s top 10 back in 2017. Since then, the Swiss has been on a decline with injuries and age finally catching up to him. Carreno Busta is only just getting back from injury himself after he was forced to retire in his match at Wimbledon. I am intrigued to see how the Spaniard will respond in this one, but the odds on Wawrinka to spring the upset are simply too hard to ignore here.
