TennisSection previews Wimbledon 2022 as Novak Djokovic takes on Jannik Sinner in the Quarter-Finals on Tuesday July 5th, 2022.
Can the world number one Novak Djokovic continue on in his quest for Grand Slam #21? The Serbian superstar is the massive favorite here at Wimbledon 2022 but it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the legend. Jannik Sinner is one of the most promising young players in world tennis and has been very impressive this week, can he get the biggest win of his career and cause the massive upset?
Novak Djokovic is the top seed here at Wimbledon 2022 and is the third ranked player on the ATP Tour. He arrived in London as the big favorite to lift the trophy here mainly due to his extensive grass court resume. The six time winner has looked very good at times but has also been vulnerable, surprisingly dropping sets to Soonwoo Kwon and Tim van Rijthoven. While he recovered well in those matches and was dominant in his other wins he will still be desperate to find some consistency in his game as the opposition gets more difficult. His game is perfectly suited to these fast grass courtsbut he will need his serve to be improved, especially here against his next opponent Jannik Sinner, who has been returning at incredible levels this week.
Jannik Sinner is the 10th seed here at Wimbledon 2022 and is ranked thirteenth in the world. The Italian star is one of the most talented young players in world tennis and the world has been waiting for him to make a breakthrough at a Grand Slam. His grass court record was pretty poor heading into Wimbledon, and not much was expected of him here. However, he has been outstanding, particularly in his Round of 16 win over his fellow young star Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard was heavily favored to win that encounter and was one of the favorites for the title here, but Sinner produced a masterclass to win in four sets. The Italian was not broken once during the match, and returned incredibly well. His ultra aggressive baseline game is very effective on this surface but even his biggest supporters could not have expected that performance. He is facing one of the best players in history in Novak Djokovic for a spot in his first ever Grans Slam Semi-Final but given his form and Djokovic’s inconsistent performances, he will be dreaming of another upset here.
The two players have met once before, with Novak Djokovic winning in straight sets. I am expecting a much closer encounter this time around, with Jannik Sinner being in the form of his life here at Wimbledon 2022. However, the Italian is likely to come up short here as there is no better big game player than the Serbian. Sinner is playing well enough to win a set and push Djokovic to the limit, but it would be crazy to bet against the top seed here given his experience and sheer will to win. It will be a great match, but expect Djokovic to prevail and move on to yet another Wimbledon Semi-Final.
