Wimbledon 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Stan Wawrinka Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Wimbledon as Jannik Sinner takes on Stan Wawrinka in the first round on Monday, June 27th, 2022.

Playing in just his second Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner has been tasked with a difficult first round match against three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka. This mouthwatering tie will surely be one of the picks of day one matches. So who will prevail?

Jannik Sinner has played in just one match before Wimbledon, losing in three sets to Tommy Paul at Eastbourne. That defeat could have a damaging effect on Sinner’s Wimbledon preparations. The grass court swing is the shortest on the tennis calendar and getting one match before the big battleground is not ideal especially for a young player who has only played a handful of matches on the senior tour. But nonetheless, Sinner is not expected to struggle to transition from the grueling demands of clay court tennis to the slicker surface at SW19. But his first-round opponent is a dangerous floater in the men’s draw.

Stan Wawrinka does not boast a reputation as grass-court great. But the Swiss is among the best of the rest. Wawrinka has won three Grand Slams – quite a remarkable feat – considering the era he is playing in. Wawrinka has played three matches in the build up to the 2022 Wimbledon. He made the Round of 16 at Queens, losing in straight sets to Tommy Paul. But prior to that, he scored a fine win over Frances Tiafoe, which incidentally, was his first win on the grass since 2019. Wawrinka’s most recent outing on the lawns came at the Exhibition event in Hurlinghamwhere he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Stan Wawrinka owns a 2-0 record over Jannik Sinner. Both matches were contested in the 2019 season, just before the young Italian vaulted through the rankings. Both players’ careers have taken different trajectories since then, with Sinner evolving into one of the best Next Gen stars. Wawrinka on the other hand, has spent the past year on the treatment table recuperating from a career-ending knee surgery. Experience is Wawrinka’s biggest asset, but at this juncture in his career, his chances of winning best of five matches are lesser.
