Casper Ruud got a convincing win over Jenson Brooksby, but that was hardly a test. Ruud hasn’t had the best clay court season so far, but he’s into the quarterfinals with a clear shot at the last four, but in his way stands Denis Shapovalov. Shapovalov is obviously coming off of a huge win, but with its own strange circumstances. It will be a dangerously close and unpredictable encounter for a spot in the semifinals at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Denis Shapovalov took down Rafael Nadal in a strange match, where Shapovalov did certainly have his good moments, but ultimately faced an out of sorts Nadal who was once again plagued by the left foot. Still, he played a very good and aggressive match, and I expect him to be surging with confidence. Ruud struggles against players who can utilize their aggressive prowess, and I expect that will be the case as the two clash at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov have met once before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in the final of the Geneva Open, almost exactly one year ago. Ruud won in a tight two sets. While we could have a similar result here, with the aggression Shapovalov showed, I expect him to be able to take a level of confidence into this match and pull off back to back upsets to book himself a place in the last four at the 2022 Rome Masters.
