Jannik Sinner got a solid win to kick off his campaign here at the 2022 Rome Masters, taking out a good clay courter quite easily. Sinner will love it here in Rome, being one of the best clay courters in the world at the moment, not to mention players overall. I think the slow and high bouncing conditions are pretty perfect for him, and Fabio Fognini will be able to do nothing about the relentless aggression Sinner will provide. Let’s see if the young Italian trumps the older as he aims to reach the Round of 16 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Fabio Fognini took out Dominic Thiem in a straight sets thriller, Thiem played his best match of the comeback trail, playing some aggressive tennis and certainly troubling Fognini. Fognini used the crowd and his massive groundstrokes well though. Sinner is already in good shape though, and with his massive and aggressive groundstrokes, I doubt Fognini will be able to muster up much defensive tennis at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Jannik Sinner and Fabio Fognini have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s inherently a bad matchup for Fognini, due to his nonchalant style of movement and pure ball striking to the corners, the heaviness and the pace/movement Sinner gets on his ball from the back of the court makes him a really difficult player to attack, especially on a clay court with Fognini’s defensive skills likely lacking. Let’s see if Sinner can continue his high level at the 2022 Rome Masters for a place in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
