Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov will clash for the third tournament in a row. The Bulgarian has lost in each of the last two meetings so routinely, so can he address that slide at the Rome Open where he produced some good tennis intermittently down the years?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of the most in-form players in this European clay-court swing. Tsitsipas won the first of three Masters 1000 titles on offer on the dirt in Monte Carlo, and has since made the semifinals in Madrid, losing in three sets to Alexander Zverev. Tsitsipas has already hit double-digit match wins on the surface and will be looking to extend his purple patch over Grigor Dimitrov whom he has beaten in each of their three meetings on clay. The Greek World No. 5 is a former semifinalist at the Rome Open and received a bye in his opening round.
Grigor Dimitrov, for his part, was in action on Tuesday as he dismissed the challenge of Brandon Nakashima in two sets. The Bulgarian World No. 20 was a level above the American in every department and showed his clay-court prowess with some silky shots. Overall, he converted five out of 11 break points and tallied 76% first-serve points won.
Stefanos Tsitsipas owns a 4-1 head-to-head record over GrigorDimitrov on the ATP Tour. Their last two meetings took place a couple of weeks apart with Tsitsipas running out a comfortable straight-sets winner in both Barcelona and Madrid respectively. Tsitsipas has the more assured baseline game which is marked by his ability to find crunching winners when the ball is within his strike zone. While Dimitrov will look to turn the tables in this rivalry, I feel like he is slightly error prone to stay neck and neck with the Greek in the scoreline.
