Alex de Minaur got a solid win over a tough opponent, showing he’s ready to take his game to the next level on the clay. De Minaur has really shown some improvement on the surface, I think he could always play well on it, being such an exceptional mover and such a consistent ball striker. Paul is a very similar player, but I do favor de Minaur as the more consistent player whose game is more suited towards the surface at the 2022 Rome masters.
Tommy Paul got a very good win himself, taking out another renowned clay courter to set up an even tougher meeting coming up against Alex de Minaur, a player on the rise in the last few months. Paul has the potential to win, but in order to do so, he will have to likely play the aggressive match of his life, using that underrated forehand of his to not allow de Minaur to set up his counterpunching game as he aims to stay in this one for a place in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul have met once before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting was a tight contest in Indian Wells 2022, with de Minaur winning 2-0, but still a close one. Indian Wells plays incredibly slow, and Tommy Paul actually beat Alexander Zverev that tournament, showing he was in some great form. Paul’s game is even better for hard though where it bounces a little lower, and while that may also be true for de Minaur, it only goes to show that he’s still the clear favorite to pick for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
