TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Casper Ruud in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, August 13th, 2021.
Will Casper Ruud be able to continue impressing on the ATP Tour as he continues to rise up the rankings and potentially knock out a very in form Stefanos Tsitsipas? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas use all of the confidence and momentum gained from his last 2 big wins here at the 2021 Toronto Open which were great? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Who will it be?
Casper Ruud cruised through his Round of 16 match against the experienced and in form Dusan Lajovic, making easy work of the Serb in straight sets 6-4/6-3. Casper Ruud will be very happy that he did not waste any energy on court by ensuring he got on top of the points early with his heavy spin and powerful groundstrokes. The Norwegian will know he is in great form and is now so close to the top 10 in the world, and is currently No.8 in the Race to Turin, but he is going to meet his toughest opponent yet, Stefanos Tsitsipas. Ruud has already beaten Tsitsipas at a Masters 1000 this year, but can he do it here again at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas used all of the confidence gained from that incredible win over Ugo Humbert in the Round of 32 to start his Round of 16 match against Karen Khachanov strongly and not let go of the lead throughout. Tsitsipas won in straight sets 6-3/6-2 and he was just great on all aspects of his game. The most impressive part was his serve. Tsitsipas has not lost many points on his serve due to him being able to get a very high percentage of first serves in. The Greek will be very confident after beating two very tough opponents in his last two matches, but Casper Ruud will not let him have an easy ride here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. Their most recent meeting was in Madrid earlier this year where Ruud won in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Ruud played great during that match, and Tsitsipas was a bit tired just having come off his maiden Masters 1000 victory just the week prior in Monte Carlo. I expect a much tigher match here, and because we are on hard courts, Tsitsipas should be the favourite coming into this one due to his amazing serve. Casper Ruud is a great talent, but when Tsitsipas is at his best and not tired, he is not a match yet for the Greek. Tsitsipas will make his way to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Toronto Open in 3 entertaining sets.
