TennisSection previews the 2022 Rome Open as Stan Wawrinka takes on Laslo Djere in the second round on Wednesday, May 11th, 2022.
After an emotional first win in almost 15 months, Stan Wawrinka will be eyeing a second in as many days when he takes on Serbia’s Laslo Djere. Wawrinka’s journey to return to tour-level competition is a story of desire and the one-handed Swiss is looking to write another chapter to his fantastic career.
Stan Wawrinka recovered from going a set down to defeat Reilly Opelka in the first round of the Rome Open. The three-time Major Champion ended his near 15-month wait for a tour-level win and could not hide his delight during the post match presser. He needed all the gumption and resilience that took him to Grand Slam success in his peak years against the towering American. He fell behind 3-6 2-4, and chances of picking his first win since the 2021 Australian Open looked set to vanish in the thin Rome air. But he rallied and crucially, saved five break points in the 11th game of the second set before he broke Opelkaagain to clinch the set. Wawrinka sped to victory in the decider, completing the win in two hours and five minutes.
Laslo Djere, meanwhile, held off the challenge of Borna Coric, whose comeback from injury hasn’t been going to plan. The Serbian World No. 58 maintained his momentum from qualifying as he notched his third straight win at the Rome Open. Djere, whose best results this season and throughout his career have come on clay, will now be gunning for a major upset on Wednesday when he takes on the 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka.
Stan Wawrinka and Laslo Djere have not crossed paths before on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Rome Open will be their first official meeting. Wawrinka comes into the match on the back of a confidence-boosting win over Opelka. The Swiss spoke candidly on the wait for his first win and it had started playing in his mind before coming to Italy. Now that the dust has settled, Wawrinka should be able to swing freely. He looked mesmerizing at times on Monday, pulling off some of his trademark, unreachable ground strokes. The biggest obstacle still remains his fitness and movement. It will be intriguing to see if he can manage back-to-back three setters. Nonetheless I fancy his chances of downing Djere.
