Madrid Open 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Dan Evans Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as AndreyRublev takes on Dan Evans in the third round on Thursday, May 5th, 2022.

Andrey Rublev is in the form of his life. The Russian power-hitter is one of few names every top player wants to avoid at this week’s Madrid Open. Rublev has put together a decent run on the European clay but faces an interesting third-round meeting against the dangerous Dan Evans. Will he prevail?

Andrey Rublev scored his sixth win from seven meetings on the European clay after  edging out British wild card Jack Draper 2-6 6-4 7-5 in two hours and 19 minutes. Draper, who has won four ATP Challenger Tour titles this season, dominated the early exchanges as his heavy hitting pinned Rublev  behind the baseline. However, as the match went on, Rublev started to find his range and his relentless aggression saw him come from behind to pick up a very valuable win over an inspired opponent. The Russian is one of three players with three titles this season (along with Nadal and Alcaraz) and is aiming to lift his first Masters 1000 title at the Madrid Open.

Dan Evans, meanwhile, is slowly building his reputation as one of the most improved players on clay in the past 12 months. Prior to that, Evans was widely considered one of the weakest players inside the world’s Top 100 on tennis’ most demanding surface. He has registered two mammoth wins at this week’s Madrid Open, beating seasoned clay-court campaigners in Federico Delbonis and Roberto Bautista Agut. Can he upstage Andrey Rublev on Thursday?

Andrey Rublev and Dan Evans are currently tied at 2-2 in their head-to-head. All four meetings prior to the Madrid Open were contested on outdoor hard courts. Their solitary meeting in 2022 so far was won by Rublev in Dubai. Evans has caused the Russian plenty of problems with his skill set and delicate hands in their previous collisions. But the World No. 8 is operating at a different level right now to even entertain an upset.
