Fifth seed Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to lay his hands on the Barcelona Open trophy this week. The young Spaniard is one of the red-hot favorites to go all the way, but cannot afford any sort of complacency when he takes on Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea. Who will prevail?
Carlos Alcaraz was given a harsh dose of reality at the Monte Carlo Masters this past week as he stumbled at the first hurdle. The Miami Open champion arrived at the Principality to begin his European clay-court adventure, but lost to Sebastian Korda in a thrilling three-setter. Alcaraz’s career trajectory has been subject of huge interest by the tennis fraternity with pundits and fans believing he is destined to reach No. 1 in the not so distant future. He comes to the Barcelona Open sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 11 and is one of the favorites to walk away with the title. The 18-year-old received a bye in the first round and will play Soonwoo Kwon on Wednesday.
Soonwoo Kwon will have his hands full when he takes on the Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz. But the South Korean knows Alcaraz can be caught cold in the early rounds. Three times this year, the 18-year-old has been taken the distance in his first match, so Kwon could very much give him a game. And having already secured one match under his belt at the Barcelona Open, beating Benoite Paire on Monday, this should give him the platform to make things problematic for the home favorite.
Carlos Alcaraz and Soonwoo Kwon have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Barcelona Open will be their first meeting. By dint of ranking and results in 2022, Alcaraz is the overwhelming favorite to progress. Kwon has not been at the races for the most part of this season, highlighted by his 10 defeats. This should a less-dramatic win for the fifth seed.
