Will Joao Sousa show us some strong tennis on clay and back up his opening round win? Will Gianluca Mager show us some magic on the court as he has sometimes done in similar conditions in the past? Both players are clay court lovers, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Pune Open. Who will it be?
Joao Sousa had to fight off some rust in his opening round match, having to beat the wildcard Arjun Kadhe by coming back from a set down. Once Joao got back on level terms, he finally played with freedom and dominated. However, he was lucky to have met a very inexperienced opponent because if he had met someone with a big more experience, I am not sure he would have won. Sousa is a great player on his day, but I have not seen any solid wins from him over the last 3 years or so. Will he be able to cause the upset against Gianluca Mager here at the 2022 Pune Open?
Gianluca Mager played some good tennis over the last month, going 2-3 in his matches in Australia, making the round of 16 at both Adelaide tournaments. Gianluca is a solid player on his day, and on clay he has been able to get himself some big wins, such as when he beat Dominic Thiem in Rio. Gianluca will come out here knowing that he doesn’t usually come into tournaments as a top 4 seed, so he will want to make the most of the opportunity at the 2022 Pune Open. However, Joao Sousa is no easy opponent.
Gianluca Mager and Joao Sousa have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Joao Sousa is a much more experienced player than Mager when it comes to their ATP Tour careers, the performances over the last few years, as well as the form shown in 2022 is on the side of the Italian. Both players love these conditions and will want to give it their best for a chance at the 2022 Pune Open Quarter-Finals. However, with the rust shown by Joao in the opening round, I think that Gianluca will have gained even more confidence coming into this match.
