Will Rafael Nadal get the win? Will Carlos Alcaraz pull off the upset? This will be a very fascinating one, where the legendary Spaniard on the hottest streak of his career takes on a very talented and young Spaniard who many compare to the almighty Rafael Nadal. Who will triumph to move through to the final at Indian Wells 2022?
Rafael Nadal got a very tough win over Nick Kyrgios, coming back from Kyrgios serving for the first set and just barely getting over the line in the third. He didn’t put on his best display of tennis, but once again he showed that no matter what, he is always so good at winning tennis matches. It will not be much easier coming up against Carlos Alcaraz, but I do definitely expect him to get through that one, but not without its challenges. I don’t think Alcaraz has the best formula to take on Nadal, his serve and return aren’t particularly potent and with his heavy/hard hitting Nadal will be activating his counterpunching senses and outmaneuvering the younger Spaniard on the court to shoot for a place in the final at Indian Wells 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz got a nice win over Cameron Norrie, but not without its troubles. It seemed easy, but he was down a break 3 times in the match, showing his weakness on serve. Nadal is one of the all time great returners, if Alcaraz gives it up, I don’t think he has the skill to be able to actually consistently save himself in the sets on Nadal’s service. We know exactly how Nadal will play, so it really depends how aggressively Alcaraz is willing to play. I think that since Nadal isn’t playing at his best, a faster court would really help Alcaraz, but this court will definitely help Nadal more to repel the strength of Alcaraz and put him away to reach yet another final at the Masters 1000 level at Indian Wells 2022.
Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have met once before, with Rafael Nadal leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came on the clay of Madrid last year with Nadal winning very easily, and while I think that match result is an indicator of the tough matchup, Alcaraz has improved drastically in a year’s time. Alcaraz will push him without a doubt, he hits the ball huge, but Nadal has the variety to repel the aggression, he’ll return the shots deeper into the court than Norrie or Monfils could, he’ll be giving them good height and he will of course be missing very few opportunities. Alcaraz is not without a chance here, but I don’t see him being able to step up to the line to fight the great Rafael Nadal for a place in the last two to fight for the title at Indian Wells 2022.
