Indian Wells 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells Andrey Rublev takes on Taylor Fritz in the semifinal on Saturday, March 19th, 2022.

Only one man is on a hotter streak right now than Andrey Rublev and there are no prizes for guessing who. The Russia power hitter scored his 13th straight win on Friday at Indian Wells, and is now two matches away from taking home the biggest title of his career. Can Rublev scale past an in-form Taylor Fritz in what should be an enthralling semifinal?

Andrey Rublev defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 6-2 in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells, an outcome that never looked in doubt. Rublev’s serene progress saw him win 81% first servepoints (29/36) and was only broken once in the contest. Dimitrov, for his part, had looked near-impregnable on serve entering this match. He had only dropped serve once during the fortnight, and tallied wins over the likes of Alexander Bublik and John Isner. But against Rublev’s relentless power, the Bulgarian did not master many offensive moves because Rublev did not let him to. Rublev sealed the first set with an ace after restoring his break back. In the second set, Dimtirov’s game fell apart as the seventh seed raced to a 5-1 lead before eventually closing out victory in straight sets. Rublev has now reached the semifinals of Indian Wells for the first time and plays an in-form Taylor Fritz on Saturday.

Taylor Fritz continues to excel on home soil. For the second year in a row, the American reached the semifinals of Indian Wells after seeing off Miomir Kecmanovic in a tough three-setter. There was little to separate the two players in a tightly contested first set which featured no breaks of serve and would be decided in a tiebreak. It went Fritz’s way despite letting a 5-1 lead slip away at one point in the breaker. And the American’s lapses in concentration proved crucial in the second set as Kecmanovic leveled against the run of play. However, in the third set, the unseeded Serb wilted as Fritz found a different gear, breaking his opponent for the first time in the match and then doing so in quick succession to go on to win.

Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz are currently tied at 2-2 in their head-to-head. Their most recent match came on the indoor hard courts of the Paris Masters towards the end of last season where the American won 7-5 7-6. Saturday’s semifinal at Indian Wells is likely to be on the Russian’s racket. I do worry for Fritz simply because his opponent is in much better form. Despite playing some brilliant tennis during the fortnight, the American 20th seed has been profligate at fluctuating periods in his matches. Pound for pound, these two players could match each other in baseline exchanges, but if Rublev finds another gear, Fritz might have little in his arsenal to end the Russian’s winning streak.
