TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Cameron Norrie takes on Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 17th, 2022.
Will Cameron Norrie get the win? Will Carlos Alcaraz pull off the upset? This will be a very fascinating one, where the defending champion takes on the young and on fire Spaniard. Who will triumph to move through to the semifinals at Indian Wells 2022?
Cameron Norrie got a very good win over Brooksby, taking him down quite easily to continue his title defense to the quarterfinals. To get over the hurdle that is Carlos Alcaraz though would be a might feat considering the Spaniards form. Norrie may be the slight favorite, but neither player winning would be a surprise. I would ordinarily expect Alcaraz to beat him, as I don’t think Norrie’s consistency and spins can do enough to deter the aggression of Alcaraz, but on a slow court like this, I don’t think that Alcaraz’s shots will be as effective, Norrie’s shots will be skidding lower through the court and we know how much Alcaraz loves to hit heavy in more brutal exchanges than what Norrie has to offer. I do think Norrie will take this one, but he will have to fight hard if he wants a spot in the semifinals at Indian Wells 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz got a very good win himself over Monfils, taking him down easily to continue his run here not having dropped a set. Even if he gets through Cameron Norrie though, I still expect him to drop his first set. Alcaraz can definitely win, but I favor Norrie simply for the conditions, with the way Norrie constantly redirects the ball with a very wide variation of heights and spins, Alcaraz won’t be able to as easily repel the ball aggressively like he could against Monfils or RBA. Alcaraz’s play style also isn’t insanely consistent as he is very young and can have his off days, unlike Norrie who is the defending champion and a consistent top player already. Let’s see if Alcaraz can hang on at Indian Wells 2022.
Cameron Norrie and Carlos Alcaraz have met 1 time before, with Carlos Alcaraz leading the head to head 1-0. Their head to head would indicate that Alcaraz would win, seeing as he won their US Open meeting in straight sets. That court was very quick though and that will definitely favor Alcaraz as an aggressive player is a great counter to his game. On a slow court though, it will be very easy for Norrie to move Alcaraz around the court and dictate the match. It could go either way, but I think slight favorite and defending champion Cameron Norrie will just take it and book a spot in the semifinals at Indian Wells 2022.
