TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Grigor Dimitrov takes on John Isner in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022.
Will John Isner come out and use his huge serve to get him through another tough opponent at Indian Wells? Will Grigor Dimitrov use the momentum he gained through that solid win over Bublik to get himself closer to the quarterfinals? Both players have 2 different styles of tennis, and this will be a very entertaining encounter. However, only one will make their way to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Indian Wells. Who will it be?
Grigor Dimitrov put on a great performance yesterday against the always tough, Alexander Bublik, beating him in straight sets 6-3/6-4. Grigor won 80%+ on both his first and second serve, and he continously put the pressure on Bublik to overplay. This form is great to see from the Bulgarian as he aims to get himself higher up the rankings and far into Indian Wells. Dimitrov is a streaky player, therefore when he is at his best he needs to make the most of this time. However, he is going to have to be at his best on his return game as he now meets the huge serving John Isner at Indian Wells.
John Isner showed some amazing tennis against the amazing returner, Diego Schwartzman, yesterday, beating the Argentine in straight sets 7-5/6-3. John was at his best on his serve, not ever facing any issues. However, adding to this, John Isner was getting himself involved into the return games and pushing Diego to his limits, which got him the win in straight sets and without tiebreaks. Isner loves to play in front of American crowds, and he will want to make the most of it here in Indian Wells as he will need the support and motivation to beat Grigor Dimitrov.
Grigor Dimitrov and John Isner have met 3 times before, with John Isner leading the head to head 2-1. They have not met in the last 5 years, and their careers have gone in somewhat opposite directions since then. Isner has struggled over the last year with form, but he seems to be back on the right track. Dimitrov also struggled with form, but less so than the American. I expect a very tight encounter in Indian Wells, as all of their matches have gone the distance in each set. However, with the amazing form that Dimitrov showed yesterday, I think he stands a chance to get into a rhythm against the Isner serve.
