Indian Wells 2022: Alex De Minaur vs. John Millman Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells as Alex De Minaur takes on John Millman in the second round on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.

Alex De Minaur will battle John Millman in an all-Australian clash at Indian Wells. The two Aussies have a reputation for being super athletes that will leave every ounce of energy on the court. So who will come out on top in this mouthwatering second-round clash?

Alex De Minaur will look to carry his good form at the Davis Cup to the Indian Wells. Last weekend, De Minaur was instrumental in steering his country past a stubborn Hungary side, picking up a pair of singles wins before Thanasi Kokkinakis sealed victory with the decisive win in the fifth rubber. De Minaur’s good form has been fluctuating throughout the season. He reached the second week of the Australian Open for the first time in January before losing to Jannik Sinner. He has lost his last two matches at tour-level, so he will be looking to snap that winless streak when he takes on John Millman.

John Millman has had to go through qualifying at Indian Wells this year. Millman was beaten by Tennys Sandgren in the final round of qualifying, but secured his spot in the main draw as a lucky loser. And the Australian veteran has grabbed that second chance with aplomb. Millman defeated Jan-Lennard Struffwhose initial opponent Ilya Ivashka withdrew prior to the match on such short notice. The 32-year-old Millman withstood 16 aces and a barrage of powerful hitting to win 7-6 6-4 in an hour and 34 minutes.

Alex De Minaur leads John Millman 3-0 in their head-to-head. In spite of Millman’s versatility and athletic ability, this has been a terrible matchup for him. He hasn’t won a set in their three meetings. The 32-year-old secured a solid win over Struff on Friday, but he will find De Minaur a significant upgrade in all aspects. First off, De Minaur comes to Indian Wells on the back of a very productive weekend in the Davis Cup qualifiers. Secondly, the slow turf at the desert should work in his favor, as he is likely to get everything back with interest. The younger Aussie looks poised to make the third round.
