TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells as MatteoBerrettini takes on Holger Rune in the second round on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.
Matteo Berrettini is not in a happy spot right now, but can he bounce back with a win over the talented Danish qualifier Holger Rune? This could be a contest with an upset written all over it, but the Italian should be the clear pre-match favorite in this second-round match at Indian Wells.
Matteo Berrettini continues to have issues with the abdominal injury that he picked up at the Australian Open in January. In Melbourne, he recovered during the course of the tournament and went on to become the first Italian man to reach the semifinals of the year’s first Major. Unfortunately for Berrettini, he has been subpar outside Australia, losing in the quarterfinals of Rio to Carlos Alcaraz. He recently withdrew from Acapulco due to an abdominal strain in his match against Tommy Paul, leaving him in a race against time to recover for the Indian Wells tournament.
Holger Rune has navigated through qualifying, beating Mitchell Krueger and Stefan Kozlov. And in the main draw of Indian Wells, he shocked France’s Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-2 on Friday night. This was just his second main draw of 2022 and extends Humbert’s misery as the Frenchman cascades down the ATP rankings. Rune did not face a single break point in the match winning a whopping 83% first-serve points. His second serve was almost flawless too, averaging about 80% points won.
Matteo Berrettini and Holger Rune have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Sunday’s match at Indian Wells will be their first official meeting. Berrettini’s recent abdominal injury and reports of a possible split up with his girlfriend AjlaTomljanovic could affect his headspace. Rune is a tireless 18-year-old who certainly has the game to make things even more problematic for the big-hitting Italian. If there is a possible flare up of the injury, I can’t see a way in which Berrettini comes out of this match unscathed.
