TennisSection previews the 2022 Qatar Open as Dan Evans takes on Egor Gerasimov in the first round on Monday, February 14th, 2022.
Dan Evans is looking to keep up his hot start to 2022 at the Qatar Open. He is projected to meet fellow Briton Andy Murray in the quarterfinals, but will need to overcome a pair of determined opponents, starting with Egor Gerasimov.
Dan Evans needs no reminding of his last match at the Qatar Open. He played a returning Roger Federer in front of a jam-packed crowd and lost the match in three sets. That defeat kick started a winless spree of four matches before he returned to winning ways. But on the other side of the coin, it was also a turning point in his season of some sort, after Evans battled some confidence issues around March last year. He embarked on an incredible run to the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, scoring the finest win of his career over Novak Djokovic. Overall, he tallied 25 wins and won a maiden ATP title in 2021. And 2022 has started on a positive note, with Evans compiling a solid 6-2 record for the season. He was unbeaten in singles matches at the ATP Cup and reached the semifinals at the Sydney International. Evans will be playing for the first time since a third-round exit at the Australian Open.
Egor Geraismov might have lost his status as Belarus’ top-ranked male player a long time ago, but his fighting abilities are still intact. The 29-year-old took a set off Felix Auger-Aliassimein the first round of the Rotterdam Open this past week before losing in three sets. Gerasimov is currently languishing outside the top 100 and needed to play a lot of qualifying matches to reach the main draw this season. This explains why is he is on five-match losing streak in the main draw, and his situation will only get significantly harder from now on. He is set to open up against British No. 2 Dan Evans.
Dan Evans and Egor Gerasimov have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Qatar Open will be their first official meeting. Gerasimov’s results have been poor, but his performances better. Evans, for his part, has fared decently in Australia and should certainly win on his return to Doha. The Briton has almost every trick in the book to counter Gerasimov’sraw power.
