Rotterdam Open 2022: Karen Khachanov vs. Cameron Norrie Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Cameron Norrie in the second round on Wednesday, February 9th, 2022.

After narrowly escaping Alexei Popyrin, Karen Khachanov’s task is about to get even harder. The power-hitting Russian will need to do something out of the ordinary to end his title drought at this week’s Rotterdam Open. A meeting against Cameron Norrie should serve as a barometer of Khachanov’s title aspirations.

Karen Khachanov edged out Alexei Popyrin in dramatic fashion. Just like their first meeting in Dubai last season, Khachanov needed the thrill of a third-set tiebreak to defeat the big-serving Australian. He dug himself into a hole at some point when he trailed Popyrin by a set. But having recaptured his timing and fluency, he began to hit the ball exceptionally with purpose. Khachanov completed a whitewash second set by dropping only one game before that tense tiebreaker. Khachanov needed three match points to take down Popyrin and reach the second round.

Next up for Karen Khachanov is British No. 1 Cameron Norrie who endured a mixed start to 2022. Norrie’s form in Australia shrank and he was outplayed at both the ATP Cup and the Australian Open. He finished his Australian summer campaign with an abysmal 0-4 record. But for a player of his quality, that barren spell lasted for a few more days before he picked up his first win of the calendar with a 6-2 6-4 win over Ugo Humbert . He was a man on a mission in his first round at the Rotterdam Open, romping to a 4-0 lead before taking the first set 6-2. In a battle between two left-handers it was Norrie who took control of the match despite his brief spell of playing catch up in the second set. With the win secured, Norrie will now look to kick on his 2022 season.

The head-to-head between Cameron Norrie and Karen Khachanov is tied at 2-2. Remarkably, all four meetings were played during the course of the 2021 season. Crucially, it is Khachanov who seems to have an upper hand on hard courts. He won their first collision which ironically happened at the Rotterdam Open. But you could make case of Norrie still searching for his A-game at the time. The Briton has since become an amalgam of a counterpuncher and an offensive ball striker who is tough to hit through. However, Khachanov is one of very few players that can break Norrie at will with his power-packed forehand. Expect the Russian to come out on top in a very close tussle.
