TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as Andy Murray takes on Alexander Bublik in the first round on Wednesday, February 9th, 2022.
Andy Murray will look to repay the tournament organizers at the Rotterdam Open with a big performance on Wednesday. Murray is a wild card at the tournament he last won in 2009. But he will have his hands full against an in-form Alexander Bublik.
It hasn’t all gone to plan for Andy Murray. After a bright start to the year at the Syndey International, Murray lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Japan’s Taro Daniel. That defeat set Murray so far back in his aspirations for the 2022 season. The Brit would make a surprise revelation that he will opt out from the entire clay-court season in order to give his body sufficient rest time and more chance of winning outside the dirt. That decision has received mix reactions, but it is worth noting that Murray has undergone hip replacement surgery and playing matches on the dirt is extremely demanding from a physical standpoint. Murray still retains hope that he can challenge at the biggest tennis tournaments, with Wimbledon offering one glorious tale in the making.
Andy Murray will battle Alexander Bublik in what should be an entertaining first-round match at the Rotterdam Open. Bublik recently won his first ATP title on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier with a fantastic straight sets win over top seed Alexander Zverev. While the Kazakh is renowned for his ostentatious tennis, he went to the basics this past week. A big first serve and a power-packed forehand proved to an effective combo that took him to title success.
Andy Murray and Alexander Bublik have only played once before their scheduled first-round meeting at the Rotterdam Open. Murray won their match at Wimbledon in 2017 when he opened proceedings as the defending champion. Back then, Bublik gave us a taste of his flamboyance and showy baseline game. Murray though took care of business and recorded a routine win. The tables have been turned this time. Bublik is on the rise as Murray is leaving the limelight. The Kazakh has had an extra day’s rest, so he should be fully energized for another win on Tuesday.
