TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round on Tuesday, February 8th, 2022.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the top seed at the 2022 Rotterdam Open, and he’s got his eyes set on the prize this week. The Greek reached the semifinals last year and has a very tough opener on paper, against the flamboyant Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is an ever-present at the Rotterdam Open. This is his sixth straight appearance at the ATP 500 event (five main draws), and recorded his best result yet when he reached the last four stage last season. He fell to eventual winner Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The Greek World No. 4 will avoid the Russian at least until the final, with draw pitting them both in separate sections. But Tsitsipas has a seemingly tough path to reach the championship match in Rotterdam. Assuming he will race past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opener, he could face one of Ilya Ivashka or Lloyd Harris in the second round. The likes of Alex De Minaur and Denis Shapovalov are also projected to be his quarterfinal and semifinal opponents respectively.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, meanwhile, arrives at the Rotterdam Open with a 1-3 record for the year. The Spaniard’s sole win came in the first round of the Australian Open where he defeated Alex Bolt in straight sets. He had the misfortune of losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime by the extraordinary scoreline of four tiebreak sets in the next round. Last week, he lost in the first round of the Montpellier Open to Adrian Mannarino in straight sets – not ideal preparation at the start of the February indoor swing.
Stefanos Tsitsipas leads Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match happened at the Monte Carlo Masters last April where Tsitsipas led 7-5 before his opponent retired hurt. It will be a clean slate this time, with Davodivich Fokina looking to snap his two-match losing streak. But given Tsitsipas’ excellent record indoors, the top-seeded Greek looks nailed on to reach the second round of the Rotterdam Open.
