TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Max Purcell (LL) in the Semi-finals on Friday, June 25th 2021.
Will we see the third upset in a row by Max Purcell as he looks to continue his fairytale run here at the Viking International where he has exceeded expectations? Will Lorenzo Sonego continue to put on solid and composed performances on a surface which we would not expect him to be at his best? Both players are capable of winning this match, but only one will make their way to the 2021 Eastbourne Open Final. Who will it be?
Max Purcell came through an extremely entertaining up and down match in the Quarter-finals, beating the experienced Andreas Seppi in 3 sets 6-4/1-6/6-4. In the third set it looked like Seppi would win the match as he was up a break. However, Max Purcell was able to break back when 2-4 down and win the next 4 games to steal the set. Max showed great composure during the tight moments, and this will only give him more confidence coming into the Semi-final. Max will need to raise his level even higher now as he meets his toughest opponent of the week in Lorenzo Sonego who has played well all year. Can the fairytale run continue?
Lorenzo Sonego put all of our doubts to bed about his game on grass when he absolutely dominated his match against Alexander Bublik in the Quarter-final. Lorenzo Sonego won in straight sets 6-1/7-5 and he showed us that flat balls and low bounces are not going to stop his rhythm when he is feeling himself. Looking at the draw, Lorenzo Sonego will know that he has a very strong opportunity to lift his 2nd title of the year if he makes it to the Final, but he needs to ensure he does not take his next opponent here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open, Max Purcell, too lightly as he has caused 2 upsets in a row.
Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Max Purcell has been levels above what anyone expected all week, but I see the fairytale run ending here. He beat a subpar Gael Monfils and Andreas Seppi, but now that he meets Lorenzo Sonego, there will be nothing sub par from the Italian. Lorenzo will come out here at the Viking International ready to win another match in straight sets to make his way to the Final and give himself a shot at his 3rd career title, and 2nd title of the year.
