TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals on Friday, January 28th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most tense rivalries on tour composed of two of the top of the game. Who will move on to the final at the 2022 Australian Open?
Daniil Medvedev got an incredible win over FAA, storming back from 2 sets to love down and saving a match point in the 4th set to book back to back semifinals vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas. He struggled with his serve in the first 2 sets, and with an inspired FAA on his tracks, he had to play so well in the right moments, changing his game to be more aggressive, crushing backhands down the line time and time again. Medvedev will be tired, but it’s a really favorable matchup for him and Tsitsipas looked shaky all tournament before his quarterfinal match. In the end, I expect Medvedev to win the match because of the dynamics of the rivalry where Medvedev is able to make a lot of plays on the Tsitsipas serve while also breaking his aggressive game down in all the longer rallies. Let’s see if the top seed can take down the Greek and book himself a spot in the final at the 2022 Australian Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas played an unbelievable match against Sinner, defying expectations and crushing the young Italian in straight sets. He played nearly flawless, and while Sinner did help him, he was even hitting his backhand in an emphatic fashion. He definitely has a shot against his greatest rival in Daniil Medvedev considering their physical shapes. However, the matchup is definitely extremely favorable for Medvedev, and on the quick courts of Australia, I don’t see Tsitsipas being able to bully Medvedev with his forehand like he was able to do in his quarterfinal. Let’s see if Tsitsipas can continue defying expectations and challenge the Russian to clash for a place to fight for the trophy at the 2022 Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have met 8 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 6-2. Medvedev owns Tsitsipas in their head to head, especially on hard court where his only loss came at the 2019 ATP Finals where Medvedev failed to win a match. Tsitsipas struggles on the return sometimes, and with how well Medvedev serves, it will be too difficult for Tsitsipas to break him. Tsitsipas on the other hand is often broken down by Medvedev by his defense. Daniil can go really big and play aggressively as we saw in his quarterfinal, but against Tsitsipas he likes to play safer, not allowing Tsitsipas to play his game and eventually just drawing out all the unforced errors. Medvedev may be tired, Tsitsipas may be back in form, but with their history and Medvedev’s level having been so high for so long, I expect Medvedev to take down Tsitsipas and book his spot in the final to fight in the most important match of his career, not just for his 2nd grand slam, but for the World No. 1 ranking. Let’s see if he can go all the way at the 2022 Australian Open.
