TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Gael Monfils in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022.
Matteo Berrettini has produced a remarkable turnaround of his fortunes at the 2022 Australian Open. From fighting a stomach issue and determined challengers, he is now in the quarterfinals of the year’s first Grand Slam for the first time. Will he overcome another challenge in the form of Gael Monfils?
Matteo Berrettini was overlooked by many to advance this far at the Australian Open (myself included). I felt that his victory over Brandon Nakashima would come at a cost. And after dropping a set in a four-set win over Stefan Kozlov, he was instilled as the underdog in his third-round match against Carlos Alcaraz. Berrettini silenced the doubters and has pretty much reinvigorated his interest in the tournament after a turbulent start. But the road won’t get less rocky, with France’s Gael Monfils lurking in Tuesday’s quarterfinal.
Gael Monfils, for his part, was at his usual free-flowing best as he ended Miomir Kecmanovic’s participation, perhaps much later than expected. Admittedly, Kecmanovic might not have contemplated the idea of reaching the second week once the draw of the Australian Open came out and seeing his name next to the World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. But after a dramatic change of opponent following Djokovic’s remarkable withdrawal, young Kecmanovic went on a tear. But he met his match in Monfils, who hammered 17 aces and won 81% first-serve points en route to 7-5 7-6 6-3 win. Next up for the Frenchman will be the power-hitting Matteo Berrettini.
Matteo Berrettini leads Gael Monfils 2-0 in their head-to-head. The first of those two meetings was a classic at the Flushing Meadows in which Berrettini defeated Monfils in five sets in the quarterfinals of the US Open. The Italian was also triumphant in their other collision at the 2021 ATP Cup. Monfils has taken centre stage with his resurgent form in this embryonic season. He is yet to be beaten in completed matches. Betting against Berrettini at the 2022 Australian Open has proven to be a very unwise choice in this past week. This match will be on a knife-edge at times and I reckon the Italian will power past the 17th seed.
