TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Benoit Paire in the Round of 32 on Saturday, January 22nd, 2021.
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Benoit Paire pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a top tier player taking on the fiery Frenchman coming off a great win. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled to get past next-gen star Sebastian Baez in the second round of the Australian Open, dropping a set but for the most part taking part in a very high quality encounter, really improving himself as the match went on. Tsitsipas is not in for an easy match either going into the third round where he will take on Benoit Paire, a very inconsistent player, but one with a masterful backhand strike and a flare for shotmaking. Tsitsipas will likely take him out, but he won’t do it easily, I definitely think he will be pushed as he isn’t at his best, but ultimately he will keep improving and likely book himself a place in the Round of 16 as he aims to continue his campaign throughout the 2022 Australian Open.
Benoit Paire got a great win over Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of the Australian Open, taking him out in 4 sets, winning 6-4 6-4 6-7 7-6, playing a brilliant match in a backhand masterclass. If his forehand was more reliable, he would have a much better shot against Tsitsipas, but the forehand to forehand exchanges with Tsitsipas will be too much for him to handle considering how much better the forehand of Stefanos is. I do think Paire can push Tsitsipas, because like with the forehand, he is on the opposite end of the spectrum with Tsitsipas, possessing a much better backhand, so he can definitely come in on that side and sneak some points away by focusing on that. Let’s see if he can push the Greek as he aims to move on to the 2022 Australian Open and pull off a shocker.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Benoit Paire have met four times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 3-1. Paire’s one win came in 2017, when Tsitsipas was nowhere near his current skill level here at the 2022 Australian Open, and Tsitsipas knocked Paire down quite easily recently, but Paire was often tanking matches and was in a very bad patch in general. I expect Paire to do a little damage simply due to his serve being dangerous and obviously the backhand exchanges. Ultimately though, Paire will of course fall to Tsitsipas and allow him to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Australian Open.
