TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 32 on Saturday, January 22nd, 2021.
Will Roberto Bautista Agut get the win? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a very exciting matchup between two top players both in great form. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Roberto Bautista Agut got a great win over Kohlschreiber, destroying him in straight sets to set up a much tougher meeting with top American player Taylor Fritz. While he is the favorite to win the match, he very well may lose and he will have to be careful. I do think he will win, simply due to the fact that he plays a much more consistent game than Fritz does, allowing him to break down his game and his serve that allows him to breeze through his opponents. Let’s see if RBA can get through an epic and book his place in the fourth round at the 2022 Australian Open.
Taylor Fritz got a great win over fellow American Frances Tiafoe, taking him out in straights. To defeat RBA though is a much greater challenge, towards the end of the match Fritz choked up and had to win it in a tense tiebreaker instead of serving it out at 5-4, showing he still struggles mentally and with the way that he plays. I don’t see him being able to defeat a player of the quality of Roberto Bautista Agut, considering his game is very consistent and he is able to show excellent mental resolve. Let’s see if Fritz can stay competitive and pull off the slight upset to book himself a spot in the last 16 at the 2022 Australian Open.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Taylor Fritz have met 6 times before, with Roberto Bautista Agut leading the head to head 5-1. This head to head may be slightly misleading, they played a lot on other surfaces and haven’t met on a hard court since 2017. Taylor is a much different player than he was even 3 months ago, so I definitely expect him to show up and fight for the match, but at the end of the day, RBA is too consistent and didn’t struggle mentally in his match, nor did he struggle with cramps as Fritz did. Let’s see if RBA can pull this one out in an epic and progress to the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open.
