TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Marin Cilic in the third round on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022.
Will Marin Cilic show us why his experience is so great as he aims to beat a top 10 opponent to make it into the second week? Will Andrey Rublev continue to cruise through opponents as he aims to get into the fourth round? Both players have big serves and forehands, and it will be a very tight battle. However, only one will make their way to the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?
Marin Cilic played a very good second round match, beating Norbert Gombos in 4 sets. Cilic is a great player and over the last year or so, he has really found his game again which is helping him reach the later stages of tournaments compared to lets say 2 years ago. Marin is very reliant on his first serve, and then he really hopes to get his forehand into play. This reliance can sometimes help him in fast conditions, such as here at the 2022 Australian Open, but when they are not firing on the day, it can hurt him. Will he be able to outserve Andrey Rublev?
Andrey Rublev had no issues in his second round match against the experienced Ricardas Berankis, only losing 6 games all match to take the match in straight sets. Andrey is a great player who really wants to find the levels he had in 2020 in 2022. Andrey has a huge serve and forehand which allow him to push opponents off the court. With his power and speed of shot, Andrey has beaten some of the biggest names in tennis before, so he knows he can do it here at the 2022 Australian Open. However, he meets another big hitter in Marin Cilic.
Andrey Rublev and Marin Cilic have met 5 times before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 4-1. They met twice last year and Andrey won both of those encounters. Although Marin is a former grand slam champion and has way more experience on the big stage, the form of Andrey is just something else. Andrey has more speed behind his shots and he is able to find more rhythm in his game. Marin is very reliant on the first serve, and he is prone to losing concentration at times during matches, which will only help Andrey to make his way to the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open.
