TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Dan Evans takes on Arthur Rinderknech in the second round on Thursday, January 20th, 2022.
Will Arthur Rinderknech come out and improve on that extremely tight encounter he had in the opening round? Will Dan Evans cruise through yet another opponent as he aims to get himself far? Both players have played well to start of the 2022 season, but only one will make their way to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?
Arthur Rinderknech has been in great form to start the 2022 season, reaching the Adelaide Open final just last week. However, as we saw from all the champions and finalists of Adelaide and Sydney last week, they had a struggle in their first match here at the 2022 Australian Open. Arthur was no different, meeting the local Aussie, Alexei Popyrin, and having to fight over 5 sets to get the win. At no point was Arthur not leading or tied in the scoreboard, which really helped his mindset I believe. However, he was not really strong on his second serve, which if only a few points here and there did not go his way, he could have been on the next flight out. Will he be better as he now meets Dan Evans?
Dan Evans cruised through his first match against the experienced David Goffin, beating the Belgian in straight sets 6-4 / 6-3 / 6-0. Dan is a great player and he started off 2022 strongly at the ATPC up. With a flamboyant playing style, and many different shots available in his selection due to his amazing one-handed backhand, Dan Evans knows that he can get somewhat far this week at the 2022 Australian Open. However, looking at his next opponent in Arthur Rinderknech, Dan will know that he needs to be ready to return deep and well if he is to get things going properly.
Dan Evans and Arthur Rinderknech have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Arthur started off this season in great style, making his maiden ATP Tour final, when we look at Evans’ start to the year, it can be seen as better. Dan beat much tougher opponents this year at the ATP Cup, played a great opening round match here at the 2022 Australian Open, and has only lost 1 match this year, compared to Arthur who has already lost 3. I expect a tight match just because of Arthur’s improvement, but Dan Evans will win this in the end.
